Wood graining is a technique for imitating the grain and look of natural woods with paint. It is a faux finish technique that dates back to the
Egyptian times when it was developed as an interior design element as the ancient culture began to decline . Wood graining is a cheaper way to produce a luxurious finish to doors, frames and windows as well as interior paneling, crown moldings and cabinets. There are techniques using both acrylic and oil based paints and there are techniques that are not true wood graining but still produce a wood like feel such by glazing and dragging.
Wood graining is therefore a cheaper solution to interior design and of course allows for less rare and tropical hardwoods to be cut from our ever diminishing rain forests. Cabinets and furniture can be transformed from
cheaper construction materials into teaks, mahoganies and even inlay and marquetry designs. The wood grain is drawn or painted and then covered with tinted varnishes to create the depth and luster of the natural wood finish. This technique can also be used for exterior doors and metal garages due to the advancement of exterior UV protecting acrylic clear coatings developed in the last decade.
It is important to differentiate between true wood graining and mere glazing, the later is generally a much quicker and cheaper technique that requires considerably less skill due to the lack of drawing. A good faux finisher should be up front about this with the customer as estimates are developed for a project. SEE MARBLE
